Mercenary leader supports Russian attack on Ukraine.
The Department of the Treasury sanctioned the head of the Mali division of the Wagner Group, a Russia-based mercenary group that regularly assists with Russia’s military agenda. The leader of this division, Ivan Aleksandrovich Maslov, is a Russian national who regularly arranges meetings between Russian oligarchs and government officials from other African nations and deploys paramilitary units throughout Mali.
“Treasury’s sanctions against the most senior Wagner Group representative in Mali identify and disrupt a key operative supporting the group’s global activities,” said Brian Nelson, the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. “The Wagner Group’s presence on the African continent is a destabilizing force for any country that allows for the deployment of the group’s resources into their sovereign territory.”
